Episode 256 is an interview with a college student-athlete, my son, Parker Hanks.  Parker is entering his senior year academically at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  I interviewed Parker a year ago on Episode 211.  I invite you to click on the All Episodes link below and listen to that episode.

Today, Parker and I talk about some of the challenges of the last 2 years with COVID, we reflect on some of the challenges he faced during his recruitment and he give you some insight into his athletic and academic experience at Northwestern.

I did the interview while I was on the road with Sutton, my youngest son, for his baseball weekend in Lawrence, KS.  Sutton's team had a rain, actually a storm, delay on Saturday, so I got Parker on Zoom and we recorded the interview.  The interview went great, but my microphone wasn't working, so my questions were hard to hear and garbled.  So I visited Best Buy and purchased a new microphone and had to re-record and splice in the interview questions.  If you hear some difference in volume and some 'canned' sounding questions, then that is the reason.  The star of the episode is Parker anyway.

By the way, Sutton's team, the Marucci Midwest 18u Victus Nationals, won all 4 games.  They won Thursday night, they were stormed out Friday night, delay from morning to Saturday night for 2 games and won on Sunday morning.

The end of this episode has Item #4 of the Recruiting Checklist that is found in The Athletic Scholarship 24 Month Planner & Journal book, written by Recruit-Me founder, Jon Fugler.  Hear how you can get full Recruiting Checklist and the book in this episode.

Episode 255 brings up the issue of coaching changes and how they effect a student-athletes recruitment.  The main reasons I wanted to bring this up is that coaching changes happen very often and I do not want you to be surprised when it does during your recruitment or after you are playing at that college.

There are ways to handle a coaching change and use it to your advantage.  Listen to this episode for many helpful tips on how to know there is a coaching change, how to deal with a coaching change and strategies to enhance your recruitment if there are coaching changes.

Also, hear about item #2 and #3 of the Recruiting Checklist that is a feature of the The Athletic Scholarship 24 Month Planner & Journal.  The Athletic Scholarship 24 Month Planner & Journal is a 300+ page book that you can plan and record events and communications during your recruitment.

This episode, Episode 253, of the Athletic Scholarship Podcast is a hodgepodge of information about recruiting and about college life.

The recruiting information is a reflection of what my family is doing right now with Sutton.  Sutton is going to be a Senior, Class of 2022, at Ozark High School in Ozark, Missouri.  because of COVID roadblocks over the last year, we are now ready to start send his introductory emails, player profile, schedules, recruiting questionnaires and videos to college coaches.  Coaches that are on his list and to college baseball coaches that are near the places he will play this summer.

The college life information is a pea into how parent, mainly me, travels and observes as his, again me, son's team plays their last 3 games of a weird year.  I try to show you the may perks and opportunities that a parent gets to experience on a road trip.  Also, since this is the last series of the year, I try to reflect some of the emotion of the players and the parents, especially the seniors on the team.

College sports are tough.  They are filled with highs and lows of emotions, but the highs way outweigh the lows.  So get on board and let's spend 5 days together.

Part 2 of 2 of An Interview with Coach Rand Chappell is packed with helpful recruiting tips and insights.  Coach Chappell is the Head Basketball Coach at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS.  In Episode 251, Part 1 of this interview we cover the differences of the different levels of basketball play and recruiting, the COVID effect, JUCO advantages and scholarships and much more.  Coach Chappell has coached basketball for over 30 years and he has coached at the JUCO level, the NAIA level, the Division 2 level and the Division 1 level.  In this episode, Episode 252, he tells how his boss, the Head Coach, had him mark "No" on recruits at a summer tournament based on if they interacted negatively with coaches, other players or officials.  Other subjects in this episode are the discipline of High School sports, Academics and JUCO opportunities.  Much of this advice is helpful for all sports and all levels.  Take this 15+ minutes to learn a little more about the recruiting process.
