A week ago I got a text from a father of a student-athlete that reminded me of Myth #1 About Athletic Scholarships. The truth, as stated in the Recruit Me 3.0 is: A very small percentage of high school student-athletes receive scholarships because the coach "happened to find them". Only the top-line elite athletes receive enough national media recognition that they are automatically recruited without having to make an effort. The other 99% or so have to take the initiative to contact the schools where they have an interest. Most schools recruiting budgets are limited and coaches rely on you to contact them. The text I got was asking why some local, small colleges and junior colleges hadn't contact his son or the son's coaches about him. The son, the basketball student-athlete, had just been named to an all-conference and all-district team as the high school basketball season had just ended.
