Last week's episode, Episode 295,
was It's Spring Time and it contained 4 items that high school student athletes can do this Spring to rev up their recruiting. The 4 items were turned toward the high school student-athlete, but parents need to know what's going on too.  The items were #1 Take care of academics #2 Work on your sports skills #3 Communicate with college coaches and #4 Get help from a parent or a mentor. So go back and listen to last week's episode.

This week we tilt more toward 4 things that parents need to do to assist with in their son or daughter's recruitment. Here's item #1 that parents can do for their son or daughter's recruitment this spring, Discuss the process with their student-athlete. Item #2 is The parent should be the scheduler #3 The parent needs to be the administrator or the overseer.
The last item, #4, is Be an encourager, your son or daughter will need this.

Over the last two episodes, Episode 295 and on this episode 296 There are some key points to parent-athlete teamwork. Working as a team throughout the whole process will be less stressful for both the parent and the student athlete. Working together as a team helps the student
athlete focus on his or her academics, improving athletically and on communicating with college coaches. Remember this is not a sprint, if you start early in high school by educating
yourself and researching schools, the shared workload will pay off.

Myth #10 About Athletic Scholarships is the last of the 10 Myths that can be found in the Recruit-Me 3.0 Athletic Scholarship System.  Go to Recruit-me.com for more details on the Recruit-Me 3.0 System.   Myth #10 is I already recieved a letter from a coach, so I'm being recruited.  The truth is that coaches send out hundreds of letters to athletes they know little about.  Chances are that there are hundreds of student-athletes receiving the exact same letter you did.  Why? Because the coaches want to know who's interested, so they can begin a recruiting dialog, look at stats and evaluate them.

This episode talks about how many initial communications to a high school student-athlete are camp and showcase invitations and are, especially early in your high school career, generic.  Listen in to find out more.

Episode 289 is Myth #9 About Athletic Scholarships.  Myth #9, from the Recruit-Me 3.0 Athletic Scholarship System, is Coaches resent being contacted by prospective athletes.  The Truth is the contrary of that.

-Coaches hope to hear from student-athletes

-Coaches need to refill their rosters yearly

-Coaches don't have the time or the budget to recruit everybody

-When you contact coaches, you are making their job a little easier.

You will hear some clips from a college coach about contacting coaches and also Tweets from many coaches and organizations about the importance of contacting college coaches yourself.

Episose 286 is a continuation of the series of the Myths About Athletice Scholarships.  This series comes from the Recruit-Me 3.0 Athletic Scholarships System.  Myth #7 is I Have to be the Best Player on My Team to Get Any Athletic Financial Aid.  The Truth is you don't have to be a "Blue Chip" prospect to get an opportunity to play your college sport.

This episode talks about how a student-athlete's maturity is a factor in your recruiting process and that getting into the high school varsity level, whether you are at a small school or a large school, may or may not matter.  Our family has 5 different paths to each kids personal experiences and to their college paths.

The "Blue Chip" recruits usually go to the high level NCAA Division I programs and they are the ones that get the most media attention.  This episode covers that there are many more opportunities than just the DI option.

Today's myth is Myth #5:  Most athletic scholarships are full-rides.  The truth that is found in the Recruit-Me 3.0 System is: Truth; It is just the opposite.  Other than football and basketball, it is very rare for a student-athlete to be offered a full athletic scholarship at any school.  Coaches have limited scholarships as regulated by the NCAA.  They try to stretch their scholarship dollars, just as you try to stretch your education dollars.  Your child will likely be offered room and board, tuition, or books, or some combination of these.  Be prepared to pay some money at any school where you are offered a scholarship.

Not all, well maybe all, do.  College coaches court 5 to 10 recruits for 1 spot on the team.  College coaches tell the recruit that you will play from day 1 on campus or you will get your favorite locker that you saw on your campus visit.  Get more details by listening to this episode.

Episode 278 is a great mix on advice from past Athletic Scholarship Podcast interviews over the last year and a half.  I have been fortunate to have done interviews with college coaches, present and former college athletes and parents of current players and past college players.  Listen to this episode to get advice from each unique experience.  Some of the best advice comes from people that do the recruiting and from people that have been recruited or had their kids recruited.

This episode covers subjects like taking the initiative, getting your 1st offer, learn to talk to coaches, learn lessons on being an adult, getting on a coach's radar, being honest as you talk to your high school or club coach and being prepared to not be the 'top dog' as you enter college.

I also finish the series of covering Appendix F of the Recruit-Me 3.0 Athletic Scholarship System manual.  Starting in Episode 265 there have been small snippets about How to Study and How to Make the Most of Your Time strategies.  The final strategy today is about Test Taking Tips and a Final Word on Studying.

Episode 277 has a load of information about the NLI; National Letter of Intent.  Many high school student-athletes and parents only know about the National Letter of Intent as the signing to commit to go to a college and play a sport.  I go to the NCAA.org, the NAIA.org and NJCAA.org websites, plus the National-Letter.org website to give you the nuts and bolts about the National Letter of Intent.  There is actually a National Letter of Intent, a Letter of Intent and a Celebratory Signing Form that cover all the levels of sports played.  The NCAA D1, D2 and D3 level and the NAIA and the Junior College levels all have different rules and regulations for the signing for a high school student-athlete.

See how the National Letter of Intent binds the prospective student-athlete and the school institution together.  See how the NCAA D1 and D2 levels are bound to this National Letter of Intent.  There are 652 NCAA D1 and D2 National Letter of Intent member schools.  The NCAA D3 level does not give athletic aid scholarships, so the D3 level signs a Celebratory Signing Form.  Hear the rules on this Celebratory Signing Form.  The NAIA level has a less binding Letter of Intent and then the Junior College(JUCO) level has more commitment rules and sets a player up to be able to transfer later to a 4 year college.

Both of my sons have had their signing days and celebrations in the high school gym.  Parker a D1 signing and Sutton a NAIA signing.  Both signings were a great and fun culmination to careers in high school and travel ball and a look into the future of college.  Listen to learn about Letters of Intent and go to Recruit-Me.com to get the FREE and inexpensive resources that Recruit-Me provides. Episode 275 is a big announcement for my youngest son and our family.  The name of the episode is "Well, That Just Happened".  Sutton has verbally committed to Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri and will sign his National Letter of Intent on November 10th.  This is the culmination of a recruiting journey that has ran through the COVID riddled high school and summer sports seasons and the work that Sutton and our family put in through these seasons.

I review how Sutton started the recruiting process by setting up parameters to the college experience he might want and then he started building a list of colleges.  Sutton sent introductory emails, his Player Profile and email updates as he performed at a high level and did well on his ACT test and GPA in high school.  His baseball metrics like throwing velocity, hitting exit velocity, and his speed in the 60 yard dash and his athletic abilities translated into skills that coaches want and need to fill their rosters.  Sutton gained attention from D3 and NAIA schools as he emailed those schools and talked to his high school and summer coaches to pin down schools that would fit his playing ability and educational needs.  Sutton's unofficial visits and camps and showcases were integral to his options and final decision.

I also do something I probably shouldn't do by comparing my oldest son, Parker, and Sutton to each other and then show some differences in their recruitment paths.  Like I have said many times, if there are 1000 high school student-athletes, then there will probably be 1000 different recruiting paths taken.
