Filling out and registering on the appropriate NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA Eligibility Centers are often overlooked and not understood as a step of the recruiting process.  Here in Episode 257 of the Athletic Scholarship Podcast, I provide you with links to find the Eligibility Centers and what to expect when you start to fill out all the information needed.  I also tell you why you need to fill out the information and which accounts are free and which accounts cost you some money to register.  There are avenues in these Eligibility Centers that lead you to the level of athletic play you are looking for.

Episode 256 is an interview with a college student-athlete, my son, Parker Hanks.  Parker is entering his senior year academically at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  I interviewed Parker a year ago on Episode 211.  I invite you to click on the All Episodes link below and listen to that episode.

Today, Parker and I talk about some of the challenges of the last 2 years with COVID, we reflect on some of the challenges he faced during his recruitment and he give you some insight into his athletic and academic experience at Northwestern.

I did the interview while I was on the road with Sutton, my youngest son, for his baseball weekend in Lawrence, KS.  Sutton's team had a rain, actually a storm, delay on Saturday, so I got Parker on Zoom and we recorded the interview.  The interview went great, but my microphone wasn't working, so my questions were hard to hear and garbled.  So I visited Best Buy and purchased a new microphone and had to re-record and splice in the interview questions.  If you hear some difference in volume and some 'canned' sounding questions, then that is the reason.  The star of the episode is Parker anyway.

By the way, Sutton's team, the Marucci Midwest 18u Victus Nationals, won all 4 games.  They won Thursday night, they were stormed out Friday night, delay from morning to Saturday night for 2 games and won on Sunday morning.

The end of this episode has Item #4 of the Recruiting Checklist that is found in The Athletic Scholarship 24 Month Planner & Journal book, written by Recruit-Me founder, Jon Fugler.  Hear how you can get full Recruiting Checklist and the book in this episode.

Episode 255 brings up the issue of coaching changes and how they effect a student-athletes recruitment.  The main reasons I wanted to bring this up is that coaching changes happen very often and I do not want you to be surprised when it does during your recruitment or after you are playing at that college.

There are ways to handle a coaching change and use it to your advantage.  Listen to this episode for many helpful tips on how to know there is a coaching change, how to deal with a coaching change and strategies to enhance your recruitment if there are coaching changes.

Also, hear about item #2 and #3 of the Recruiting Checklist that is a feature of the The Athletic Scholarship 24 Month Planner & Journal.  The Athletic Scholarship 24 Month Planner & Journal is a 300+ page book that you can plan and record events and communications during your recruitment.

This episode, Episode 253, of the Athletic Scholarship Podcast is a hodgepodge of information about recruiting and about college life.

The recruiting information is a reflection of what my family is doing right now with Sutton.  Sutton is going to be a Senior, Class of 2022, at Ozark High School in Ozark, Missouri.  because of COVID roadblocks over the last year, we are now ready to start send his introductory emails, player profile, schedules, recruiting questionnaires and videos to college coaches.  Coaches that are on his list and to college baseball coaches that are near the places he will play this summer.

The college life information is a pea into how parent, mainly me, travels and observes as his, again me, son's team plays their last 3 games of a weird year.  I try to show you the may perks and opportunities that a parent gets to experience on a road trip.  Also, since this is the last series of the year, I try to reflect some of the emotion of the players and the parents, especially the seniors on the team.

College sports are tough.  They are filled with highs and lows of emotions, but the highs way outweigh the lows.  So get on board and let's spend 5 days together.

The Athletic Scholarship Podcast has hit a milestone.  The 250th episode is quite an accomplishment.  In this episode I will take this 15 minutes to honor and reflect on how the Athletic Scholarship Podcast started and give you a taste of some great information that Jon Fulger passed on in episodes 1-203.

Jon Fulger is the founder of Recruit-Me and the Athletic Scholarship Podcast.  I took over in June of 2020, so the overwhelming number of episode were the work of Jon.  Let's celebrate this milestone of 250 episodes by listening to how Recruit-Me, Recruit-Me.com and the Athletic Scholarship Podcast were inspired.

Episode 249 includes 6 Psychological Challenges you might encounter in college.  There are probably many other subjects I could speak to, but these 6 came to mind.  These psychological challenges can effect both the college student-athlete and the family of the college player.  They can actually have some effect on your decision on a college and the sports program you choose.  As I say in the podcast, the goal of this episode is to "create a little space in your mind" so you will not be surprised  and so you can help make decisions while you are still going through the recruiting process.

The Psychological Challenges covered are(in no particular order):

  • Living away from home, both close to home and far away.
  • Living in a dorm and with a roommate you may or may not like.
  • You will not be the smartest in your class or the best player on the team.
  • You may not play in games much your 1st, 2nd or even your 3rd or 4th year.
  • Be ready for injury, coaches leaving and /or new recruits or transfers.
  • The coach wants you to change.

Again, these challenges may effect both the student-athlete and parents.  Being aware, being prepared can save some bad situations.  Listen to become aware of some of the traps that hurt and shorten college careers.

Attributes.  What are attributes? There are many ways to use the word, this episode, Episode 248, uses the Oxford Dictionary definition: a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of some or something. So you are going to use your attributes and achievements to brag on yourself to college coaches.  This is an awkward part of the recruiting process, but telling coaches about yourself honestly is how they get to know you and to consider you over other recruits.

Hear the Why? How? and What? of using your attributes.  This episode walks you through How to write out your attributes, Why your attributes are important and What you do with all you attributes.  Let's get after it!

Episode 244 of the The Athletic Scholarship Podcast is Part 1 of 2 of an interview with Cameron Wright.  Cameron and his family moved to Ozark, MO about 2 years ago and I have got to know them through basketball, baseball and golf.  Cameron's middle child is the same age as my youngest son and they both play high school baseball and basketball together.  As I have got to know Cameron I found out he is from Southern Illinois and his family knows my in-laws that are from that area.  Cameron attended Southern Illinois University and was a 5 time All-American high jumper and a 4 time Missouri Valley Conference high jump champion.  Also, Cameron, qualified and participated in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA.

In this episode we cover Cameron's athletic background, his family and his college, college coaching and Olympic career.  Cameron covers the seasons of Track and Field, the events, the number of athletes on a team and the number of scholarships available.  Our discussion covers Track and Field recruiting, what a high schooler needs to do and how important the high school state championship are in the sport.  There is a large amount of recruiting done at the JUCO level and even at the International level in the sport.

Last week on Episode 241 I asked you and I talked about, Would you be ready if a college coach called you today? I hope you had a chance to listen to Epi 241.  From that podcast it brought up the question of What would you ask when you talk with a coach? What specific questions should you ask?  So, this week's topic covers many specific questions that you can add to your toolbox to be ready and more comfortable to talk with a college coach either face to face or on the phone.  This is a task that the student-athlete has to take on.  The student-athlete needs to read these questions, practice them in the mirror, in the car, and say them out loud to themselves and to their parents.  The student-athlete must write these questions down or type them and have the questions on paper or on their phone.  Have the questions easy to get to when a phone call comes.  In this episode I talk about recording the coach's answers to these questions by taking notes and immediately add the notes to your communication tracking chart on paper, on a spreadsheet or in the Athletic Scholarship 24-Month Recruiting Planner and Journal.  Click below to get more information on this book.

This episode ends the series of 17 questions that have been asked by student-athletes and parents.  These questions are taken from the Recruit-Me 3.0 Athletic Scholarship System, click below for more information on the 3.0 System.  The Recruit-Me 3.0 System is normally only $127, saving you hundreds, even thousands of dollars over a recruiting service.  I have a new End of School Special price of $99 good through May 31, 2021.  Take advantage of this discount to get the summer off to a great start and take advantage of coaches getting more active after COVID stopped visits and communications.

Will you be ready when a college coach calls? Episode 241 ask, If a college coach called you today, would you be ready?  What would you do?

As a parent or student-athlete, you do not want to do all the work to get contacted and then not to be prepared to actually act on the contact.  So if you have made your list of schools, made you videos, been to a showcase or ID camp, done you work on the field or the court or the pool or the mat, you do not want to stall the process because you are not prepared to act on the contact.

Hear how Sutton, my youngest son, reacted and responded when he got his 1st coach contact.  Also, hear how a teammate was preparing for his junior year of high school by getting ready to send his information to coaches, but got pleasantly surprised by the level and number of coaches' contacts he received after a showcase.

Doing an interview with Coach Barry Hinson is fun, inspiring and informational.  Coach Hinson has been a high school and college basketball coach for 40 years.  His resume runs from a high school in Tulsa, OK to becoming the head coach at Oral Roberts University, Missouri State University and Southern Illinois University and being on the basketball staff at Kansas University and currently at Oklahoma State University. Barry was at Missouri State University for 9 years and I got to watch him recruit and coach some very fine athletes and coach some very successful teams in Springfield, MO.  Hinson's track record coaching on the court and getting recruits to be successful on the court and in the classroom is exceptional.  Coach Hinson is very passionate and wears his emotions on his sleeve.  As you will find out in this episode, Episode 239, Part 1 of An Interview with Coach Barry Hinson and next week's episode, Episode 240, Part 2, all I had to do was prompt Barry and he covered many, many aspects of recruiting and how to get ready for college.

Listen and find out what Barry has to say about NCAA Rules, how recruiting is a family decision, how to find the right college fit, then we jump to what Coach Hinson watches for when he is watching a game of a recruit.  Stay tuned in for Coach's special additional piece of recruiting advise, too.

Episode 238 is Part 2 of 2 to An Interview with Glenn Quick. Glenn is an Assistant Athletics Director and Academic and Career Counselor for Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. In Episode 237, Part 1 of the interview, Glenn gives us his background, what academic counselors do for an athletic program and how his professional life was changed as he attended college.

This episode, Episode 238, covers a large amount of helpful information that will help you decide on a college and help to prepare you for college while you are still in high school and how not to get "Senioritis" in high school. He explains how an academic advisor helps a new college student-athlete in helping with choices of classes, balancing the athletic vs academic schedule and getting the student-athlete on track toward graduation. The Academic Advisor helps to balance classes, practice, games, training and travel. In this episode we get into some differences between high school and college.

Click Here for Episode 238: Part 2 o 2 of an Interview with Glenn Quick.

Glenn also dials in on a feature many universities have and that is Career Counseling. See some advantages a school can provide to a student-athlete with this department of their athletic program.

Thank you to Glenn Quick for his time and valuable information. If anyone has any questions for Glenn, then email me at Brent@Recruit-Me.com.

This is Part 1 of an Interview with Glenn Quick.  Glenn is the Assistant Athletics Directory and an Academic and Career Counselor at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas.  In this episode we will find out what academic counselors do in general and how Glenn found his way into this area of athletic academic and career counseling. Hearing how, like many college students, your professional career may change as you take college courses and as you meet people throughout your college time.  This is a good lesson and an informational nugget that we get out of this interview.

I met Glenn in college at Missouri State back in the late 1980s.  I lost track of Glenn until we saw each other at the Missouri Valley Conference basketball tournament in St Louis in the mid 2000s.  We found out that our boys were the same age and that we both coached competitive baseball teams.  From there, we stayed in contact.  Glenn’s team came to Ozark to play in a wood bat tournament I put on and we saw each other and each other’s boys play throughout high school and summer ball.  Parker attended a Kansas baseball camp the summer after Parker’s sophomore year.

In this Part 1 of the interview, we, like I said earlier, find out what an academic counselor does on a college campus, when athletes meet with their academic counselors and in general how many times they meet a week.

If you know anything about the Real Estate business, then you know the most important thing is location, location, location.  Well, in the recruiting process location is important, but not the most important item.  It is many times not thought about as student-athletes and families look at and decide on a school.  The location of a college can positively or adversely affect a player's experience.  Being minutes from home, or 5 hours away or 15 hours away, are discussions a family needs to have throughout the recruiting process.  Relevant discussions and good discussions come from research.

This episode, Episode 236, tells you about the many questions you need to consider about location.  Our family, Parker, Sutton, Lori and I, all have examples of why location helped to make our college decisions or are going to help make a decision, in Sutton's case.  Lori, my wife, attended the University of Kentucky, and she knew she wanted to be away from home, but close enough to drive back home, a 4 hour drive.  She also had family very close to campus to help when she needed to be off campus, but not go home.  In this episode you hear how I considered the location in my college decision and how Parker's plan changed during his recruitment and how, again, Sutton is making his parameters known and how he is applying them to his school list.

Location will affect not only travel, but shopping, eating, entertainment and even down to laundry.  So let's get into location, location, location!

Episode 235 is called 3 Ways to Dig Into Recruiting Research.  The 3 ways covered are a deep dive into researching a team's or school's schedule, a team's roster and the team's coaches.  I will tell you how to do the research and why these 3 research items are important in your recruiting quest.

I will walk you through a team's schedule and help you mine valuable information nuggets that will not only help you down the road, but help you now to build a list of schools to contact.  A team's conference and non-conference foes on the schedule gives you both team travel information and more school information on schools you may have never considered.  The travel opportunities were a part of Parker's decision to go to Northwestern University.

The team's roster is a great way to analyze how you might fit into a program's plans.  See how the roster player's grade, size, stats and previous schools attended can paint a picture of your possible future at that school.

Getting information on the coaches will help you  to formulate an introductory email that will get you attention from that school.

So learn how researching a team's schedule, roster and coaches' links can move you closer to the right college for you.  Listen at the end of the podcast as I continue the Q&A section, Appendix C of the Recruit-Me 3.0 Athletic Scholarship System.

Episode 234: Recruiting Can Be Like a Car's Gas Gauge was inspired by a 2+ hour drive to Columbia, Missouri I got to make to watch Sutton, my youngest son, play a high school basketball game.  I've always noticed how the gas needle on the gas gauge seems to stick to the full mark on the dash, but then it drops quicker than you expect when it get to one-quarter of a tank.  This is a great simulation of the recruiting process.  Listen to this episode to walk, I mean drive, through the tank of gas and the student-athletes recruiting journey.  Plus, you get an idea of what the drive from Ozark, Missouri to Columbia, Missouri is like.  Exciting! : )

I hope you had a chance to listen to Part 1 of 2, episode 232, An Interview with Paul Putt. Paul is a parent of 4 student-athletes. Last week's episode gives you the family's background and where all 4 kids are in their athletics and schools. We get into some great advice as Paul tells about his 2 oldest daughter's recruiting journeys and lessons the family learned. It is great to hear from someone that has been through not just one recruitment, but two.

Part 2 of 2, episode 233, gets right into some great advice about making sure your student-athlete wants to play in college. Paul talks video, making a school list, how important it is for the student-athlete to be able to talk to coaches and the importance of academics. We get into the 3rd daughter's current recruitment and how club coaches are helping. The interview concludes as we discuss how being mentally and physically strong as you enter the freshman year of college is so important. Remember, if the student-athlete is going to a 4 year college, they will be competing against 21, 22 year old men and women.

I want to thank Paul for all the helpful information he has passed on in these two episodes, episode 232 and 233.

Please email me, brent@recruit-me.com, if you have any questions for me or Paul.
