Here is the 2nd part to the Recruit Me Dynamic Duo of resources for you to make a great first impression as you contact college coaches. Recruit Me and The Athletic Scholarship Podcast teaches you, the student-athlete, the 7 Steps to an Athletic Scholarship. Step 1 is Contacting the Right Schools and that is a big step that takes some time and researching and sole searching. Then, Step 2 is Writing a Great Introductory Email so you can make an impressive "handshake" with a college coach. The 2nd half of the Making a Great First Impression Duo is what I cover in today's episode. Step 3, Building Your 1-Page Player Profile. These two documents work together make you standout from other recruits as you pursue a spot on a team and a scholarship from colleges.
In this 15 minute episode I cover what to include in your 1-page, 10 section, resume-like document. The Player Profile is a difference maker to get you on the radar of a college coach. Inspiration can come from anywhere. I saw a tweet that had a clip of an interview with the host, Ed Mylett, interviewing Sean Casey, a former MLB player and now a host on the MLB Network. You can find The Ed Mylett Show on your favorite podcast app or on YouTube. The 1 hour and 6 minute interview is named How to Overcome Rejection & Failure and WIN! w/ Sean Casey & Ed Mylett. What attracted me to this interview was that @TJHannam10 highlighted a line from the interview that stated "I want to play college baseball, Dad", "They're not coming, Sean..GO ON OFFENSE". The mention of wanting to play college baseball caught my recruiting eye and when I listened to the first 20-30 minutes of the interview it told a very relatable story for many, many student-athletes in not only baseball, but in any recruiting situation. This interview gives you, not only recruiting lessons, but life lessons and inspiration. The shownotes below have a link to the Ed Mylett/Sean Casey interview. The Transfer Portal has been a big change in college athletics. In the past, a college student-athlete wanted to move from 1 four-year NCAA college to another four-year NCAA college, then that student-athlete would have to sit out 1 year of competitive play before they were eligible to play for the new college. Now, under a few rules, a college student-athlete can transfer 1 time without having to sit out a year. On this episode, Episode 348 of The Athletic Scholarship Podcast, you get the history of the Transfer Portal, how it works today, how it effects high school, junior college and even other college student-athletes in the recruiting world.
