Last episode, episode 216, gave you a pill that can be hard to swallow and this episode, 217, continues treating the symptoms of how hard it is to get a full scholarship.  Let’s cover all the offerings of NCAA Division III, the NAIA and the JUCO ranks.  This episode shows you that there are many, many alternatives other than NCAA DI.  See how D3, NAIA and JUCOs have affected my family.

One of the hardest pills to swallow in the recruiting journey is that you may not get a Full Ride scholarship to play your sport.  The pill may not be because you are not a great player, but it may be because of all the rules and regulations by the college athletics governing bodies, the conferences or the schools themselves.  This episode is Part 1 of 2 that discusses how many athletic Full Ride scholarships are even available and what alternatives you have to get a scholarship.  Hear how the NCAA, the NAIA and NJCAA impact your quest to play your sport and how the different levels within each one will influence your decision.  If you will wade through a bunch of information with me, your picture of your future will be made a little easier.

This episode covers NCAA Division I and Division II options and then next week will cover NCAA III, NAIA and JUCO options.  So let’s dive in and learn about scholarship definition and numbers.

What do you do when you can’t get a 4.0 GPA, 33 ACT score, All-Conference and Conference Pitcher of the Year, 8-0 record, .86 ERA, Left-Handed pitcher recruited?

Listen to this episode to get a picture of how hard it is to get recruited and hard you have to work to get it done.  I tell some of my son’s story, Parker, on his journey to Northwestern University.  Parker and our family had many ups and a few downs in the recruiting process and I wanted to share some of the experience to help make your experience better.

Emails, a want list for colleges, an actual list of colleges, a recruiting questionnaire are subjects I talk about on this episode.  There will still be ups and downs in your journey, but hopefully you can expect them and deal with them.  Listen to see how planning and working hard can result in a scholarship at a school that fits you.

Listen to a great interview with Neal Stafford, the Head Coach of the Missouri State University Bears Men’s Golf Team.  Missouri State is located in Springfield, Missouri and happens to be where I graduated from in 1989.  The Bears are a Division 1 golf program and a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Coach Stafford, going into his 15th year as the MSU Head Coach, takes some time out of his day of watching his 2 children and then golf practice, to answer some important recruiting questions that will help golf student-athletes and all other sports understand both golf and general recruiting information.

Tune in to listen to what a golf coach looks for in a recruit.  Hear what it takes, both skill-wise and academically, to play at the college level.  You will find out how competitive it is on the course and at practice and you will never guess how many prospect emails he gets for each recruiting class and when they start!

Episode 213 covers three subjects concerning what student-athletes can do as they go back to school.  Some will get to play sports this fall and some won't.  So, let's take advantage of both situations!

By embracing both hands that are dealt, the student-athlete can concentrate on three areas:

  1. Contacting college coaches
  2. Video
  3. Academics

Learning how to take charge in these areas will get you ahead of the pack while others are waiting for coaches to come to them.
