Welcome to Episode 338 of the Athletic Scholarship Podcast.  I had the opportunity to interview Amy Sappington about the ACT test.  Amy is a Math teacher and is in her 5th year of teaching the ACT Prep Class at Ozark High School in Ozark, MO.  This is Part 1 of a 2 part interview with Amy.  This episode will introduce Amy, give you her background and family's background.  She will explain that not only does she teach ACT Prep at the high school, but she tutors and teaches ACT strategies outside of the classroom.  Amy will tell how she got into the tutoring and then layout the basics of the ACT test.  We will cover why a high school student should take the ACT and when to take it.  You can get ACT test information at ACT.org.

This episode is the 9th episode in a series of Inside Looks into the NCAA, NAIA & NJCAA Websites.  Today we hit on the resources that these websites provide you for free.  This series shows off mulititudes the free websites provide.  The problem is that you can get on these websites and waste time going down a rabbit-hole.  So this episode directs you to Searching for Colleges and all the tools and searches these websites provide.  Each website has search tools that lead you to college websites and conference websites, even the championship links and the rankings links are helpful.

The past episodes cover the specific topics of Eligibility Centers, Academic Requirements, Guides for College-Bound Student-Athletes, Questions to Ask, FAQs, What to Do Before You Go, NIL, NLI and now Searching for Colleges.  Go to your favorite podcast app and find and like The Athletic Scholarship Podcast or go to the Recruit-Me.com website.

Welcome back to the series of direct looks at the NCAA, NAIA & NJCAA websites.  After the last 2 episodes broke from this series with a year in review episode and a re-introduction to Recruit-Me episode, today's episode is the 8th in the website series.  Today we dive into the NLI or National Letter of Intent.  The NCAA.org covers the optional, but binding National Letter of Intent.  Because the NLI has requirement for athletic financial aid it is only functional for the NCAA Division I and II levels.  The NCAA Division III offers a Celebratory Signing Form to allow Division III commits to have a non-binding option to sign at a signing ceremony. The NAIA division has a non-binding Letter of Intent and the JUCO level has a Letter of Intent or LOI that is binding at the NJCAA level, but not the NCAA or NAIA level.

All of this information comes straight from the NCAA.org, NAIA.org and the NJCAA.org websites.  The purpose of this 'looks inside websites' series is to save you time, money and stress by taking you directly to specific topics on each website.  These websites are great, free recruiting resources for you, but you can waste a lot time by not staying focused.

Here we are in the 7th episode in a series called An Inside Look at the NCAA, NAIA & NJCAA Websites.  Today we get a look at the new Name, Image & Likeness Policy, or NIL.  The NCAA.org, NAIA.org and NJCAA.org each have sections and webpages that introduce and cover the new NIL Policy.  This episode guides you directly to each of the websites pages to help save you time in learning about the NIL Policy.  The new NIL Policy may or may not effect your recruitment.  Doing some research on it can help you decide on how to proceed with this subject for recruiting.  The NCAA.org site says student-athletes can now take advantage of opportunities using your name, image & likeness.  You can work with businesses across industries and staff on your campus as your NIL opportunities are exploring unchartered territory in college sports.  This is an important change that imporves the student-athletes experience.

The first 6 episodes in this series gave you a look into Eligibility Centers, a direct link to Academic Requirements, the Guides for the College-Bound Student-Athlete, the fourth in the series gives you Questions to Ask, the next episode takes you to FAQs and last week's covered What to Know Before You Go.  Go to Recruit-Me.com to hear these past episodes.

Episode 324 was inspired as I recently watched the Facing Nolan documentary on NetFlix.  The documentary was a 1 hour and 42 minute story about the Hall of Fame, Major League Baseball pitcher, Nolan Ryan.  Ryan first played for the New York Mets in 1966 and he played for 27 years for the Mets, the California Angels, the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers.  I remember collecting baseball cards and Nolan was a big star.  He was a hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher and it was said he threw his fastball 100+ miles per hour.  Nolan's legacy grew through the late 1970s and all through the 1980s.

The part of the story that really caught my eye was that Nolan Ryan struggled early in his pitching career.  He almost quit and through him listening to his wife, him listening and learning from new techniques with his Angel's pitching coach and his refound dedication and hard work.  Nolan had never failed and his situation, even though he is now a Hall of Famer, is very similiar to a high school or college student-athlete.

Listen in to see if you hear the similiarities.  Also, you will hear some past clips from interviews about the kind of work you need to put in.

Episode 323 was inspired by looking a Twitter one night and seeing a bunch of high school student-athletes post their committments and offers.  I was struck by the many different and obscure college names that were listed.  Colleges at all levels, JUCOs, NAIA, NCAA Division I, II & II schools.  Twitter & other social media sources can give you a name of college that you may want to put on your school list and to research.

Listen to this episode to get many more resources to gain colleges to your school list.  Compare them to your parameters list and do research to make a decision to pursue the schools further.  Recruit-Me and The Athletic Scholarship Podcast wants you to take charge of your recruiting journey and to contact colleges that fit your parameters.  Be aggressive on contacting schools and don't wait for a school to find you and then realize that it is not the right fit for you.

Welcome to The Athletic Scholarship Podcast, Episode 321.  Interviews give great, hands-on information and this interview is from a recently graduated Division III football player.  My nephew, Easton Hanks, attended, graduated and played football for Westminster College in Fulton, MO.  He played for the Blue Jays for 3 years and 21 games as a Defensive Back.  His second year was drastically reduced as the Jays played only 3 games because of COVID.  Easton not only battled COVID on the field, but in the classroom and he was successful in both.  Easton had 36 tackles, 13 assists, 4 interceptions and 11 pass breakups in the 21 games and he graduated with a Business Administration degree in just 4 years of college.  Easton attended Ozark Technical College(OTC) right out of HS and didn't play a sport and then transferred to Westminster College and took care of his business in the classroom.

Listen in to hear how Easton ended up at Westminster and what made his decide to play football again after high school.  Also, he tells about the competition at the DIII level and his advice on how to get ready to play college football and how to excel.
