Ask Jon a recruiting question

May 2, 2017

A little bit different format in this episode, as Jon Fugler takes you into a live coaching call he just completed with parents and athletes.

He lifts and excerpt from that call and features a handful of questions parents  asked him.

For instance, Matthew asked, "Why does the NCAA allow colleges to verbally commit so young?"  Jon responds with a warning about verbal commitments and how it can damage your scholarship chances.

If you have a question Jon can answer on a future episode, email him at jon@recruit-me.com.

You should find the questions in this episode probably apply to you, too.

Being face-to-face with a college coach, or having a phone conversation, can make a high school student-athlete tremble.

In this episode, recruiting expert Jon Fugler helps athletes and parents maximize their conversations with college coaches.

This is an opportunity for the athlete to put himself or herself in the best light with a coach who is recruiting them.  Jon shares three things that will help that conversation in a big way.

If an athlete can present him or herself in a positive way, that will set him or her apart from other athletes.  Of course, talent has to be there, but coaches recruit beyond talent, too.  They look for character and attitude.  This can come out in a conversation.

Recruiting expert Jon Fugler isn't be overly dramatic when he says...

...that believing and acting on recruiting lies can cost an athlete a scholarship.

Have you ever bought something and you were unpleasantly surprised when the item arrived?  The picture was misleading.  And you bought it.  What a disappointment.

The same is true in recruiting.  If you act on things that are actually misleading, you'll be disappointed.  And you'll lose time and money getting back into the game.

Listen as Jon share five of the biggest lies that can trap you.  He'll address the lies, followed by the truths.  Act on truth and you've got a bright future.

Jon shares from personal experience and what he has seen for the past 15+ years with other families.

For instance, one of the biggest lies athletes and parents believe is this:

"If my kid is good enough, the college coaches will find him or her."

Jon takes quite a bit of time to address the corresponding truth and how to capitalize on that truth.

Get in the game and stay in the game by acting on truth and rejecting lies.  There's a lot of misinformation out there.  This episode gets right to the point.

One of the most impactful things an athlete (and parent) can do is make a personal visit to a college campus.  More questions can get answered by the in-person experience than any other way.

Plus, you'll also make a lasting impression on college coaches.

Of course, the big goal for athletes is to get an invitation for an "official visit."  However, unofficial visits have huge value.  In this episode, recruiting expert Jon Fugler explains why.

But the core of this episode is Jon's insights into five things you should do when making a campus visit.  You have to go with purpose and follow through on that purpose.

Whether you have a visit coming up or you're making plans to do that this spring or summer, make sure you've got these five things on your radar.

Recruiting expert Jon Fugler digs into that in this episode, leaving you with steps you can take immediately.  You'll be energized and focused as you listen.

Parent, if you'll commit to your role, you'll find that your athlete will excel in a number of ways.  Together, you'll achieve that scholarship dream.

This is one of the 5 most popular episodes of the past year and we wanted to release this Flashback Episode during the Christmas season.  We take you back to what was originally Episode 04.

If your son or daughter expects to be recruited you both need to know what college coaches think about recruiting. In Jon Fugler’s exclusive interview with Coach Tom Kunis, he’ll share directly about how to approach coaches, a big trend that’s hurting recruits, the important role of your high school coach and the academic piece in recruiting.

Tom’s coaching experience spans two decades and he has been at some of the top programs in the nation. More than 50 of his recruits have gone into the pros and you’ll hear his genuine care for the student-athlete. Tom will open your eyes with direct comments and warnings as you go through the recruiting process.

Following the interview, Jon answers a listener’s question on the topic of a recruiting timeline. He walks you through the activities you should take, depending on what year your son or daughter is in high school.
